CAFE GRATITUDE (Larchmont location): CRAP! i ate my food so fast i forgot to take a sweet pic! oh well. If you’re veggie and live in LA, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve been to this place. If you’re vegan/raw vegan and live in LA, there’s a 99.9% chance you’ve been here. I’m well aware that in some circles this place has the stigma of being some new age hippy cafe that forces you to make like affirming statements to get a meal (it’s true!). In fact, there was recently an article written naming this place as one of the top 10 reasons to hate LA. (If the smug New Yorker who wrote it had done any research, they would have known that Gratitude is actually a child of the SF/bay area where it started over 10 years ago and only recently opened in LA. But whatever. Details.) Anyways. If you haven’t been to this place yet, you are missing out. For reals. I seriously CRAVE this place sometimes. My favorite dish is ‘I am pure,’ a kale and sea vegetable salad with the best ever ginger-tahini dressing. Add their house made Kim chee, and it is seriously one of the best, most refreshing salads on the planet. Tonight I had the macrobiotic bowl, ‘I am whole.’ The word macrobiotic might scare off some people, but let me tell you, don’t let it. Every bite was an adventuring flavor and texture. From savory, to sweet, to crunchy, to awesome. And the cool thing about this place is that you always leave full, but the kind of full where you still feel like partying. Speaking of partying, they also have a pretty sick selection of organic beers and wines. (I personally go for the prosecco). To sum it up: this place is legit. So don’t be a wuss. Get to cafe gratitude and order yourself some hippy new age life affirming food already! Veggie/vegan rating: 10/10 (DUH!) (at Café Gratitude)

Sqirl Kitchen - this new spot on Virgil is really cute. I love the concept- 2 small local businesses coming together under 1 roof to make a great little venture. Sqirl Kitchen specializes in jams made in house from locally sourced organic fruits and veggies. G&B coffee comes from 2 guys who used to work for Intelligentsia. Together, you get a great little cafe that also serves brunch and lunch. The small but awesome menu is built to feature the jam, but butters, fresh cheese, etc that is all made in house. There are a lot of “things on toast” items with bread from the local Proof Bakery, as well as a selection of “things on rice” (even the rice comes from a local organic family owned farm). For brunch, the menu was predictably primarily egg dishes. Haven’t been during the week for lunch, but I have a feeling it’s not too different. The only issue I had was the seating. Eating brunch on low coffee table is slightly uncomfortable. But I’ll let it slide. So to sum up. Local local local, blah blah blah. I recommend this place for sure. Not good for large parties. Veggie option rating: 9.99/10. Vegan option rating: 2/10 (lots of eggs, but also a lot of jam. Could probably alter some items to make it more vegan friendly) (at Sqirl Kitchen)
